History of Art, Geography, History, and Chemistry Olympiads for high school students

A total of 57 high school students in Geography, 87 in History of Art, 85 in History, and 20 in Chemistry from both public and private schools of the Valencian province will come on Friday 6 March to the Universitat de València centres to participate in the local stage of the olympiads in these respective subjects.

The Faculty of Geography and History will host the tests in Geography, History, and History of Art. It will be the 12th local stage for the test in Geography, the 7th for History, and the 2nd for History of Art. The sessions will start at 9.30 a.m. with an opening speech in Joan Fuster hall.
All the students will receive a gift and a certificate of participation. Three winners will be given EUR 500 and a gold medal (first prize), EUR 300 and a silver medal, EUR 200 and a bronze medal. All the runners-up placed in the top 10 will receive EUR 50 and a certificate of participation.

A geography test will consist on 50 multiple-choice questions that may include charts, photos, and maps. Every question will have four options, out of which only one is correct. The test in History will consist of 40 multiple-choice questions that may include graphical data (maps, images, photos). After the main part of the exam is finished, the students will have a chance to take an additional voluntary test to compete for the prize in Information and Documentation. Extra 15 minutes will be given to complete it. The test will consist of 10 general multiple-choice questions related to books, reading process, libraries, and new information technologies. The test in History of Art will include 30 multiple-choice questions which may feature visual content. Incorrect answers do not affect the final score of the test.  Every exam shall last 60 minutes.

The evaluating academic committee of all three tests of the local stage will involve the professors of the Faculty of Geography and History, who will decide on the finalists and choose the winners of the Geography Olympiad, History Olympiad, and History of Art Olympiad.

Olympiad winning students will receive a remuneration of EUR 1,000 for their studies. This remuneration will come into force only if the winning student enrols into the first-year courses of an undergraduate programme at the Universitat de València.

The 2020 Olympiads in Geography, History, and History of Art are organised in collaboration with the Faculty of Geography and History and the Delegation for University incorporation.

Chemistry

Twenty high-school students previously selected for the local stage of the Valencian community of 2020 Spanish Olympiad in Chemistry (OEQ) have participated in a specifically targeted 12-session training program offered by the university staff of the Universitat de València.

This local stage of the exam is organised by the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ), the Faculty of Chemistry of Universitat de València, Universitat Politècnica de València, and theDelegation for University incorporation.

The test will consist of two sessions of 90 minutes each. The first part will ask the students to solve problems, and the second will evaluate their knowledge of theory via multiple-choice questions. 

The Academic Commission will be formed by the experts in Chemistry for the university admission tests (PAU in Spanish) as well as by the professors from both universities to assess the test and choose the winners.
The students who receive the best results will go on to participate in the National Stage of the Chemistry Olympiad, which will take place at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the Universitat de València from 24 to 26 April 2020.

Those who take the first place in OEQ will form a part of the national Spanish team at 2020 International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) and at 2020 Ibero-American Chemistry Olympiad (QIAQ)  The number of team members will be determined by a specific regulations of the abovementioned competitions.
