History and landscapes of the Tous “pantanà”. 40 years since the Ribera del Júcar disaster.

The Universitat commemorate the 40 years since the sinking of the Tous dam in a seminar and exposition at the Faculty of Geography and History.

The seminar and exposition about History and landscapes of the Tous “pantanà” took place on 20 October at the Palmireno hall of the Faculty of Geography and History of the Universitat de València. 40 years since the disaster of the Ribera del Júcar, to commemorate the four decades since the sinking of the Tous dam, a catastrophic event that caused numerous deaths and incalculable economic losses in the regions of the Ribera Alta and the Ribera Baixa.

 

The seminar was started by Mavi Mestre, principal of the Universitat de València; Josep Montesinos, dean of the Faculty of Geography and History; and Miguel Polo, director of the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation. This was the beginning of an intense and profitable day.

 

The attendees were able to enjoy, among others, the conference “History of disaster. What happened on 20 October of 1982?” presented by the full university professor and lecturer of the Department of Medieval History and Historiographic Sciences and Techniques, Antoni Furió. Afterwards, the meteorologist Rafael Armengot, explained the creation process of an explosive DANA; the professor Pilar Carmona described the flooding ways and processes of the river on 1982; and the professor Francisca Segura explained the harm caused and the trials that took place. To finish the morning, the exhibition located at the first-floor hall of the Facultat was opened.

 

In the afternoon, the lectures “History of the Tous pantanà from within: the population support after the disaster”; the documentary projection “When bells ring” and “Start from scratch” took place. Finally, it was followed by the social gathering about stories and experiences of the catastrophe.
