The Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry (RSEQ) has just awarded the "Young Researchers Prize" to the scientist Gonzalo Abellán Sáez. The jury has highlighted the brilliant career of this researcher 'Ramón y Cajal' who is developing his career at the Institute for Molecular Science of the Universitat de València.
Gonzalo Abellán, researcher at ICMol within the framework of the CIDEGEN plan (Research and Specialist Diagnostic Molecular Services) of the Valencian Government, holds a doctorate in Nanoscience and Molecular Nanotechnology from the Universitat de València and did his postdoctoral thesis at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg), where he created his own two-dimensional materials research group. His work focuses on the study of new 2D materials that possess unique electronic properties of both semiconductor and metallic character. Unlike graphite, these materials have modular energy gaps and broad chemical reactivity, making them excellent candidates for major applications in optoelectronics, energy storage and catalysis.
In addition to having a 'Ramón y Cajal' contract, which will soon become effective, Abellán has obtained different grants and projects for the development of its research, such as an ERC Starting Grant (2018), a grant from the Plan GenT Investigadores de Excelencia (CIDEGENT2018-GVA), a SEJI grant for junior researchers' scientific excellence (Valencian Government), and a Junior Leader Incoming grant from Fundació La Caixa, a competitive programme of postdoctoral grants for carrying out a research project in centres accredited with the Severo Ochoa or María de Maeztu awards, with which ICMol is recognised. It also maintains two R&D projects in Germany.
It has been distinguished with different prizes and recognitions, such as the Ciutat d'Algemesí 2017 Scientific-Technical Prize, the Valencia Idea 2014 Prize, or the European Materials Research Society - Young Scientist Award 2012, among others. In 2015, he was selected to attend the "65th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting", a meeting of Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine with young researchers from 90 countries, which aims to discuss the role of education, science and research in Society.
