The Escola Europea de Pensament Lluís Vives of the UV organises this week two debates to interpret, with an open mind, the present and its deep economic and geopolitical transformations cause of the publication of two recent essays: ‘The Poverty of Economics: The Philosophical Anatomy of an Empty Rationality’ by Manuel Sanchis i Marco, and, ‘La era de la Revancha’ by Andrea Rizzi. They will be celebrated on Wednesday, 21 and Thursday, 22 of May, respectively, in the Aula Magna of La Nau Cultural Centre, at 6:00pm. Admission is free until full capacity.
‘The Poverty of Economics: The Philosophical Anatomy of an Empty Rationality’, will be presented on Wednesday, 21. A book that tries to bring together economic sciences with the idea of justice, which is the first virtue of any social institution, according to Rawls. With this goal, this text gives an analytic framework necessary to conceive a fair economy. While the current notion of economy favours the extortion economy, this book proposes a model that transcends the canonical relation of Lionel Robbins between goals and resources. The book reclaims a more complete notion about rationality than Robbins because it incorporates a wide range of human attributes, and defends that economic decisions must be justified in suitable and good reasons, as Rescher reclaims, since both resources and goals require a rational deliberation.
The debate will be presented by Ester Alba, Vice-Principal for Culture and Society of the UV, and will count with the participation of Jesús Conill, emeritus full university professor of Moral Philosophy of the UV; Isabel Giménez, General Director FEBF; Fernando Mut, architect and urbanist; Guillermo Quintás, titular professor of Modern and Contemporary Philosophy of the UV and, author of the book, Manuel Sanchis i Marco, titular professor of Applied Economics of the UV.
Furthermore, on Thursday, 22 a colloquium cause of the publication of ‘La era de la Revancha’ de Andrea Rizzi, will be done. The author, who is correspondent of Asuntos Globales of EL PAÍS; Adela Cortina, full university professor of Ethic and Political Philosophy of the Universitat de València and Ferran Bono, journalist from EL PAÍS.
Facing the anxiety and confusion for the path of a speed changing world, this text locates, clarifies and suggests future sceneries. The world is falling into a new, turbulent period marked by pulses between potencies and classes and this essay is a tool to think about all of this. The accumulated resentments and the changes on power relationships spur the challenge of authoritarian systems such as Russia and China to the occidental hegemony; while, in democracies, the unhappiness of the most disfavoured classes gives wings to populisms. ‘La era de la revancha’ is a portrait of the genesis, the interaction and the course of this currents that converge into a dangerous whirlpool through the deep reflections.
