A total of 3,800 people attended the Serenates Festival organised by the Universitat de València and the Valencian Cultural Institute during the days of 24 June to 7 July in the La Nau Cultural Centre.
The average attendance to each of the 10 concerts was 380 people, a very positive number that highlights the loyalty of the attending public, filling 95% of the occupancy and available seats. This data shows a 19% increase in attendance from last year’s festival.
In total, 400 performers participated with a large presence of young people (67% were under 26 years of age) and a majority presence of female performers reaching 60%.
Serenates has been livening up summer nights in Valencia for 36 years from the historic headquarters of the Universitat de València, a space that fits perfectly with the character of this music festival, which is defined by its aim to recover and promote Valencian musical heritage through a diverse programme of different musical styles, to serve as a stage for training, creation and innovation in music, especially with the participation of young musicians and finally defined by its inclusive and equality-forward nature, all in addition to being a part of musical circuits with a similar line of synergy.
The 2023 programme was diverse and unique with the premiere of in-house productions, such as the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Universitat de València, directed by Beatriz Fernández Aucejo, that performed a concert titled ‘Una nit màgica’ (A magical night), which featured a fusion of symphonic pems and dances by Dvorak and Saint-Saëns, or the performance by Martirio and guitarist Raúl Rodríguez dedicated to Chavela Vargas.
This event’s programming was made possible by the cooperation of the Universitat de València and the Cultural Institute of Valencia, as well as the support and collaboration of the Department of Culture of the Provincial Council of Valencia, the Valencia City Council, the Palau de la Música de València (Valencian Palace of Music), the Conservatorio Superior de Música Joaquín Rodrigo de València, the Valencian School of Art and Design the European Festival Association and the Sabadell Bank Foundation.
