A professor at the Universitat de València and a director of Mètode journal, Martí Domínguez, has won the third edition of Òmnium Prize for the Best Novel in the Catalan Language of the Year with his work L’esperit del Temps (published in catalan by Proa in 2019). This fiction story is based on real-life events and narrates the memories of an Austrian scientist who turned to the Nazist ideology just like the majority of the scientific community at that time.

L’esperit del temps is a book written in an effort to warn against the far-right ideology which spreads in many countries around the world, including Spain,” stated the author in his speech. He has also pointed out that the novel is a pure ficcion story even though it may contain the real-life elements, like names of some characters. The prize was awarded by the vice-president of Òmnium Cultural, Marcel Mauri de los Ríos, and endowed with 20.000 euros of remuneration directly to the author and additional 5.000 for the book promotion.

The winner was chosen by a jury consisting of Rosa Cabré Monné, Maria Dasca Batalla, Carme Gregori Soldevila, Oriol Izquierdo Llopis, and Xavier Pla Barbero. Previously, the award winners were Raül Garrigasait for the novel Els Estranys and Marta Orriols for Aprendre a Parlar amb les Plantes

Martí Domínguez is a biologist, a writer, a journalist, and a director of the Mètode journal. Apart from his career as a professor of journalism at the Universitat de València, he is also keen on science popularization and writing of novels and essays, such as Les Confidències del Comte Buffon (1998), El Secret de Goethe (1999), El Regreso de Voltaire (2007), El Fracassat (2013), El Somni de Lucreci (2013), La Sega (2015), o L’assassí que Estimava els Llibres (2017). All these works have established him as one of the most prominent contemporary authors writing in Catalan. In his acceptance speech, Martí Domínguez stated that his works are created as an “intellectual journey” attempting to show the depth and significance of the things.

The role of scientists in legitimisation of certain actions and the Nazi politics was discussed in a monograph 102 of the Mètode journal “Science and Nazism: The Unconfessed Collaboration of Scientists with National Socialism”. This monograph brings experts together to shed light on the great cooperation in the academic community on the rise of the National Socialist movement.
