The Confucious Institute of the Universitat de València (ICUV) held on Saturday 12 April their traditional Chinese Bridge Competition. In this edition, number 24 in a university level, and the 18th for secondary students, has taken place in the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Phylology, Translation and Communication. The academic and cultural event reunited around 70 participants, one of the highest numbers since it is done in Valencia. Among the audience, a considerable number of family representation, as well as people interested in the Chinese culture and language. This annual competition values the attitudes and linguistic and cultural abilities of the students of the ICUV about China and its civilisation.

The competition is held in three phases: in the first one they have to make a speech of two minutes in Chinese; in the second phase they have to answer a questionnaire about Chinese language and culture, and in the third phase, the judges value an artistic exhibition. In this year’s gala the first place in Secondary education has been given to Valeria Colmenares; and for Jade Augustin Cangy in the university category. Both students will travel to Salamanca the days 31 May and 1 June, to represent the ICUV in the National Chinese Bridge Competition, which brings together the finalists of the ten Confucius Institutes that are currently in Spain, after the recent incorporation of the Salamanca University, which embraces this gala for the first time.

The objective of this competition, with the slogan ‘Learning Chinese, a better future’, is to increase the diffusion of the language in the Confucius, its learning between childhood and youth, and likewise, consolidate the knowledge of this culture. For the director of the ICUV, Vicente Andreu, “this afternoon we have been able to verify that Chinese is not an inaccessible language and out students enjoy learning it. The Chinese Bridge Competition, in addition, is used to share the wide and varied culture that complements their language.”

Since 2007, year of its founding in Valencia, the ICUV is the only Chinese language and culture official centre in the Valencian Community and also the only one qualified to hold the official exams. It is considered by the Chinese headquarters as “Model Confucius Institute” since 2015 and it has different awards and mentions, among which the most highlighted is being one of the best 20 in the world (existing 492) and the Distinction for Cultural Merit 9 d'Octubre of the Generalitat.
