Today Universitat de València commemorates the Day Against Female Genital Mutilation with a documentary The Cut

Today, on Wednesday, Universitat de València screens the valencian documentary The Cut on the occasion of the International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation. Directed by María Andrés and Ernest J. Sorrentino, the film narrates the story of Female Genital Mutilation in Kenia and shows the female victims that “the form and function of the organs can be restored in the majority of the cases.”
Organized by the Equality Unit in collaboration with the Cinema Club and Rector Peset Hall of Residence, the film shall be screened today on Wednesday at 18:00 in the Assembly hall of Rector Peset Hall of Residence. Among the attendees of the event will be Maria Andrés, the co-director of the documentary; Reyes Balanzá and Melisa Darocas, doctors at the Reference Unit of Reconstructive Surgery for Female Genital Mutilation; Felipe Hurtado, a psychologist integrating an action protocol for the prevention of female genital mutilation; and Aminata, a health worker specializing in female genital mutilation and the protagonist of the documentary.
The Cut captures the stories of women who have undergone female genital mutilation and takes the viewers on a trip to Kenia to prove that education is a key to empower women and end up with this illegal, discrete practice.
The documentary was awarded a prize at APANÉROWA Film Festival About Human Rights and Indigenous Peoples in Mexico, as well as at VOC, Docs València 2018 and Atlantis Film Awards.
The show is free of charge, admission is subject to the seat availability.
