The Vice-Principal for Sustainability, Cooperation and Healthy Life of the Universitat de València has enabled an app for the university community to share cars. The initiative is taken in response to the mobility problems that many of the citizens affected by the DANA are facing. The App used by the university is Ciclogreen and it will only be necessary to register in order to use it.

After the DANA, the Universitat de València will provide a car-sharing system to deal with the serious damage caused to infrastructures and public transport, which has made it difficult for workers (teaching, research, technical and management staff) to travel and which is not expected to be recovered by the time students are expected to return to classrooms.

The aim of the initiative, according to vice-rector Pilar Serra, is “to help in a situation in which many people have lost their means of transport and also those who usually used to use the train or public transport and now still can not get around”. Although the platform is aimed at the university community, the vice-rector points out that people who live or work nearby will also be able to use it “because it will be open to anyone who wants to use this service”.

This alternative can offer an immediate solution to facilitate mobility while the affected services are being restored. In addition, she adds: “Car sharing is an economical option at a time when many families have suffered material losses and need to reduce costs”. This measure also helps to reduce CO₂ emissions and promotes sustainability, which is key to preventing future climate catastrophes. Finally, this initiative strengthens the bonds of solidarity and collaboration within the university community, promoting a sense of mutual support in the face of difficulties.

How to use Ciclogreen

The Ciclogreen app is free, you only have to download it to your mobile phone, identify yourself with the institutional email of the Universitat de València and enter a password. Then, you must use the code ayudavalencia. After that, you have to access the Carpooling section and publish the journeys you need to make (as a driver or as a passenger) and it will show the people you can share with.

In this video you can follow the steps to register in the App.

This app has already been used by the Universitat de València on several occasions. In 2019, the academic institution took part in a month-long cycling challenge to promote health and sustainable mobility, a university challenge in which it came first. It will now be used to organise mobility resources in the face of the DANA disaster.
