Universitat de València will open on Wednesday 10 December at 7:30 p.m. in La Nau Cultural Centre the exhibition ‘Olive Trees are Born in Gaza’, a project gathering renowned international contemporary artists to reflect on resilience and Palestinian dignity from an artistic creation perspective with Valencian artist and curator ESCIF and Teresa Juan. This sample lies within the frame of UV’s institutional commitment with the defence of human rights and awareness on the Gaza situation, offering a tour through a universal symbol: olive trees coming out from devastation.

The exhibition presented over 20 pieces of 15 artists including systems, photography, paintings, videos, murals and collaborative pieces. Some of the participants are Banksy (United Kingdom), Shepard Fairey (United States), Emily Jacir (Palestine), Lamia Ziadé (Lebanon/France), Blu (Italy), Aruallan (France), Wilfredo Prieto (Cuba), Sam3 (Spain), Daniel Muñoz (Spain) and Valencian Fermín Jiménez Landa, David Segarra and ESCIF, along with Palestinian journalists Majdi Fathi, Saher Alghorra and Haitham Imad, with contribution from the Palestinian Community of València, BDS País Valencià and Delàs Centre of Peace Studies.

Among the most significant pieces, there is the audiovisual system created only for the exhibition by Italian artist Blu, a key figure on recent muralism. Lebanese artist Lamia Ziadé painted a mural in situl which was originally painted in 2016 on the wall between Lebanon and Israel (on the Lebanese side, at Kfar Kila). The room also takes a great three meter high and wide printed fabric by Emil Jacir that was given to the Simondi gallery and previously exhibited in the Venice Biennial. One of the most remarkable interventions is the temporary north front (Patriarca Square) with the monumental illustration: Can you hear us?by Shepard Fairey -eight meters tall, five and a half meters wide, disseminated within the fame of the international campaign Unmute Gaza. ESCIF and Banksy presented a sculpture made of fibreglass representing an axe with a flower blooming from the handle, a gesture synthetising the idea of resilience through beauty.

Reproduction of ESCIF/Banksy work

The tour reacher the La Nau Senate room, where the Palestinian Community of València worked with ESCIF to create painted pannels to visualise their voice in first person collectively. The exhibition includes a compilation of photogaphic reproductions by Aruallan / Hans Lucas Agency taken in Cirsjordania with texts from collaboration organisation the public can take with them so that they keep circulating outside the room.

The main text of the exhibition was written by journalist and documentarist David Segarra, who was in the Liberty Flotilla in 2010, attacked while carrying 50 journalists (ten of which were killed).

The exhibition can be visited in the Acadèmia Room until 22 March 2026.

Before the opening, at 6:00 p.m. the presentation of the ‘Gaza. The unending scar’ dossier will take place; a special number for ‘Pasajes de Pensamiento Contemporáneo’.
