- December 13th, 2024
Both teams noticed the high level and the welcoming Chinese public who cheered them on and interacted with them, asking for pictures after the games.
The male team had a bold participation under Jaume Tormo‘s direction. The got through the round of 32 with a 7 point difference against ESPOL (Escuela Superior Política del Litoral, Ecudador). They were close on the round of 16 against Vytautas Magnus University o Lithuania, losing with a 21-17 score. Later on, the Lithuanian team won the World Cup.
The female team also displayed a great competitive level, led by Juanjo Medina. The came out in 2nd Place in the group stage against the World Cup winner Tsinghua University of China. The Monterrey University of Mexico won by a close call with a 19-16 score in the round of 32.
Male player and previous editions player Iván Cubero shared his experience: “Qatar and China were both amazing editions. We played under a sandstorm in Qatar, whereas in xiamen, we could play on an open 3x3 couch where the public was part of the spectable. At the end of each game, fans would ask for pictures and give us rounds of applause. That created a special connection that made the difference.“
Female player Paula García commented on the hardships: “I think we lacked preparation. The DANA came before traveling and got much training away from us. Besides, changing our usual 5x5 format to a 3x3 was an additional challenge.”
Female team coach Juanjo Medina evaluated both teams: “I don’t think our countries’ particular situation affected the performance. The journey was long, but the players adapted to the hour change quite well. It was key to arrive some days before the start of the World Cup so we could adapt and perform perfectly.“
Even without any medals, Universitat de València’s teams come back with an unforgettable experience, learning, cultural exchange and human education.
