Victor García Bustos, MD from the Universitat de València, wins the Premio Internista Joven 2023

The internal physician and MD from the Universitat de València won the Professor Doctor Jaime Merino Young Internist Award 2023, awarded by the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine (SEMI). Victor García, 31 years old, is an assistant in the Internal Medicine Department at La Fe Hospital and a researcher from the Serious Infection Research Group of the La Fe Health Research Institute.

The award recognises the outstanding clinical, teaching and research career of an internist under 35 years of age. The rules and regulations of the award state that candidates must have excelled in the clinical, teaching and research fields, as well as demonstrating a continuous commitment to SEMI for at least the last three years. Candidate selection is carried out by the regional societies, which propose clinical internists, researchers and SEMI members with a scientific projection of excellence.

The prize was awarded during the 44th National Congress of the Spanish Society of Internal Medicine at the Palacio de Congresos in Valencia. The event was led by María José Forner Giner, president of the Valencia Society of Internal Medicine, and Montserrat Chimeno Viñas, first vice-president of SEMI, who were also in charge of awarding the prize.

Víctor García Bustos began his research career in 2011 as a student internist at the Universitat de València, and in 2016 he was awarded a collaboration grant from the Spanish Ministry of Education at the same centre. Founder and organiser of the Research Conferences at the UV, which eventually evolved into the Biomedical Research Congress (CIB), he has excelled in both the scientific and the academic field. During his medical residency at the La Fe Hospital from 2017-2022, he completed his doctorate degree with an outstanding cum laude mark and received the Prize for Outstanding Doctorate Thesis at the UV. His thesis was overseen by Amparo Ruiz Saurí, current dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

Recognised as the second best Spanish internal medicine resident of his class by the Spanish Ministry of Universities, the Ministry of Health, the Sanitas Foundation and the National Council of Specialities in health Sciences, he has received multiple awards from both public and private institutions. He currently works at La Fe Hospital and at Pare Jofré Hospital of Valencia and is a recipient of a ‘Río-Hortega’ contract from the Carlos III Health Institute. His contribution to medical science is reflected in numerous publications in international high-impact scientific journals.
