Manuscript
works by León Sánchez Quintanar
The "Biblioteca
Médica Hispano-Lusitana" and "Biblioteca Quirúrgica
Hispano Lusitana" manuscript works by León Sánchez
Quintanar.
These two
repertories consist of six manuscript volumes. Although the works are
different, with the first covering Hispano-Luso physicians in general
and the second just surgeons, since their internal structure is similar
we thought that it would be appropriate to study them together.
When Sánchez
Quintanar began his compilation, whilst still a pupil at the San Carlos
School in Madrid and under the guidance of his teachers Mosácula
and Hernández Morejón, his idea was to create a repertory
of biobibliographies of Hispano-Luso physicians and surgeons.
The materials
he gathered rather haphazardly for thirty years, must have been organised
after the publication of the works of Chinchilla and Morejón, since
all the letters are preceded by a list of authors not mentioned by said
authors but which he included.
We believe
these repertories to be of great value for scholars of the history of
medicine of the Iberian Peninsula, because some include notary documents,
study certificates, birth certificates, wills, autograph letters, etc,
whose original archives may have disappeared during the mishaps suffered
by said historical sources during the century since they were written.
