Carles Santos (Vinaròs, 1940) may be currently considered the most prolific and interesting artist of the Spanish avant-garde of recent decades, during which he has maintained a constant outreach. Throughout his career, his artistic production, whose cornerstone was the musical composition and interpretation, has been continuated in many other fields (cinema, performing arts, photography, text production, performances...). Some consider his sense of provocation has made him a sort of "enfant terrible" of the scene, music and artistic creation, but this must not distort a proper look at his work, so that we are facing an artist of a deep consistency.

“Universo Santos” (Santos’ Universe), an exhibition organized by the Universitat de València, is focused on the latest creations of this artist, but also aims to provide clues, create links, introduce a perspective, and ultimately set a map, perhaps imaginary, with which to provide guidance in a work that most have only enjoyed in a fragmentary way.

This exhibition proposes a tour on those elements of his work which form the basis of his poetry.

The exhibition will occupy two rooms on the ground floor of the Cultural Centre La Nau. At the Sala Estudi General a selection of video images depicting Santos’s essence will be displayed; the most synthetic and complex part of his work, his operas and music dramas, whose staging meets all the skills and artistic facets that determine Carles Santos’s style. In turn, this video montage, screened simultaneously on different screens, is arranged -avoiding chronology- according to the key elements of his personal poetry. Such videos constitute in part the key to understanding and contextualizing the creations that will follow. In the same room a selection of stunning photographs of different formats taken by him and drawn from photographic series previously shown, all of them linked to various stage productions will be exhibited; series as “La Polpa de Sta. Percinia de Claviconia", "Els ulls dels fills de Bach" or "Caligaverot" among others.

The Sala Acadèmia is a space where will be exhibited, first of all, his whole work "Pianos Intervenidos" consisting of a series of plastic-poetic proposals with the piano as the basic element, including a mobile pianola that will go over the room. Most of these objects, which some large props will be added, not only will not be static, but each will be treated independently and contextualized to be displayed with a theatrical lighting -in which the stage director and illuminator Carles Alfaro will collaborate- highlighting all its significant density.

The culmination of this objects section will be occupied by a huge cube that will be necessary to penetrate to see one of the latest Santos’ photographic creations. This eschatological end that marks one of the latest creative phases of the author.

After this tour, a historiographical section on the artist will be available at different showcases: objects, bibliographic publications and recordings, sheet music, posters and historical photographs, which will realize their career in all his facets.

The exhibition, of course, shall be accompanied by different musical performances. Specifically, it is scheduled a piano concert by Santos feature in the inauguration, along with an unusual performance and staging, coinciding with the next edition of "Serenates Musicals," one of his most impressive works for choir and choreography. The latter is "Canturia Cantada", directed by Dolors Ricart, which will be performed by the Choir of the Valencian Government.

In parallel, in collaboration with the IVAM, a film cycle covering different samples of the films (short, medium length and feature films) will take place, including both those directed by him or those in which has participated as screenwriter. Likewise, the exhibition will integrate the films in which Carles Santos composed and created the soundtracks. The historical footage of his performances will also be included in this cycle.
