Lesson 2: Use our daily products


This is the second lesson of the Unit: Let's cook. Each tab in this toggable menu represents a step in the path that we can follow to do each activity of the lesson. Finally, the Learning Outcomes of this lesson are:

Now, it's your turn to dramatize the recipe found in the lesson 1.

Warm up activities

In this part, each group will focus on their own recipe and they are going to look for the quantity of each ingredient, and then, they have to circle these numbers.

Can you recognise each number? Don't worry if you can't recognise it because we are going to discover these numbers in this lesson.

Activity 1

First of all, we are going to focus on what is a recipe. For that reason, in your group, you are going to discuss about the structure of your recipe and find the main parts of it.

After finding the main parts of your recipe, you have to try to complete with your classmates this document.

Activity 2

We've learnt what is a recipe and the main structure of it. Now, it's the moment to know the numbers that we've found in our recipe.

First of all, each group has a real bar of chocolate on their table and they can manipulate it to do the following exercises:

  If you can choose, what would you prefer 1/4 or 1/5 of a chocolate bar?

Finally, you have to apply your knowledge doing this exercise: Chocolate

Activity 3

Do you like play with water? In these activities each group will have some glasses of water and one plastic bottle.

Exercise 1

First of all, try to follow the instructions included in the following document.

Water

  Marta has 3 ½ bottles of water in her refrigerator. She used 3/5 bottle in the   morning and 1/4 bottle in the afternoon. How many bottles of water does she have left over?


Exercise 3

In a water bottling plant there are two kinds of water, one is normal and the other is special, are mixed up to make the water has different properties. Each fraction shows the amount of special water that is in the bottle. Make pairs with the bottles that have the same properties.

Finally, you have to apply your knowledge doing this exercise: Orange drink

Activity 4

  In this activity you have different spoons and cups:

Cups and spoons
Weight

  You have to order these tools and to do it you will weight out different food or liquid and compare it. Meanwhile, you have to complete the following table:

After that, you are going to convert a unit into other unit:

3 teaspoon= ____ tablespoons

8 tablespoons= ____ cup

16 tablespoons= ____ cup

EXERCISE

Finally, imagine that cups, tablespoons and the scales have disappeared, so each group has to convert the units of their recipe ingredients into teaspoons. So, add your recipe in the following Padlet.
