Background

The present proposal for a doctoral programme arises as a response to the need of the Faculty of Physiotherapy to follow its evolutionary process within the framework of teacher improvement, research and innovation. In recent years, our centre has changed from being a University School (the first in Spain to teach university studies in Physiotherapy) to be a faculty that gives a degree, two official university master’s degrees and a doctoral programme. Undoubtedly, this transformation has had repercussions on not only teaching and innovation training, but also research training. As a consequence, it also has affected the scientific production of the teaching staff of the centre, which, as it could not be otherwise, has had a positive impact in the training of students. Obviously, a more committed faculty to the advancement of knowledge in its area, favours greater proactivity of their students. In this sense, new lines and research groups have been created, and their training activity has increased. All this shows the need to develop a new doctoral programme in our faculty. The existing one, not only restricts the subject (physiotherapy and aging) of the training, but also it allows access almost exclusively to students coming from a master’s degree focused on the same subject, which limits to a large extent the study with other training that can be approached through physiotherapy. This fact reasonably involves a lack of new applications. And, since we could not understand a qualification without a university projection, we believe it is absolutely necessary to launch a new programme.
