New technologies, bioethics, and inclusive democracy
Reports by international organisms state that democracies are currently facing a threat. We need to reinforce public ethics that promote cooperation, one we can't stablish an advanced trust-centered democracy without. The congress approach is based on an analyses of these threats to democracy within an environment marked by the impact of new technologies, catastrophes and social inclusion.
Society nowadays is dealing with one of its most disrupting and complex revolutions in history. It transforms society globally, subtle and root-changing. The main cause is the exponential development of artificial intelligence (AI) throughout the 21st century. It is the second AI era, brought by the synergetic convergence with three other disciplines of scientific knowledge and technological aplication: the Internat of Things (IoT), big data and robotics intelligence; the exponential capacity of processing and memory of computers and deeper knowledge on the structure and functioning of the human brain from neuroscience and its ability to generate, gather and process large amounts of data throuh its hyperconnectivity, datafication and algorythmation of reality also had great impact on the matter. It provides a plethora of inteligent producto for automatisation in cognitive tasks that were thought to only be feasible by humans, such as design, mathematic models development, political and economical decision-making, law production, diagnosis and treatment for all kinds of illnesses and many more.
Within this technological society, humanity has been struck by great catastrophes like floods, earthquakes, fires and wars —aggravated for the inaction in front of climate change, lack of prevision and vulnerable zone protection as well as inability to use dialogue to solve conflicts. Bioethics are and must remain sensible to matters related with impact o health and vulnerability surrounding disaster zones in order to prevent them and act once they happen.
The resource of new technology may help face these challenges and reduce their devastating consequences, but promoting ethical reflection and committing to its implementation for all societal levels is necessary. Unfortunately, democracy is weakening around the globe and new technologies could be another element of its fragility if not used ethically, leading us to a world of conflict and exclusion far from humanity's goals.
This congress aims to lead people to a sustainable and inclusive democracy in a technological society that gives answer to the great challenges, specially the disasters of the present and the future. The technological determinism doesn't have the last word, but it is necessary to celebrate this kind of event to share work method for a fairer world.
The congress will be a reflection of:
1st - The role of bioethics within the technological society
2nd - The role of sustainable and inclusive democracy within the technological society
