Lab Mission

In the full rollout phase of FORTHEM, the “Lab Mission” is renamed as “Labs and Co-creation Mission” and the mission is led by UiA (University of Agder)  and co-led by JYU (Jyväskylän yliopisto) (former leader) and ULBS (Lucian Blaga University of Sibiu)

Through exploratory projects and outputs, FORTHEM Labs develop and improve new and existing models of co-creation among academics, students and external partners. The Labs involve academics, students and external partners as equals in solving a shared challenge or problem.

By mainstreaming co-creation, FORTHEM transforms the way universities work in their regions and links the regions to an international network.

Co-creation is an integral part of institutional transformation toward Open Science, Open Education and Open Access policies and practices. One way to advance this transformation is to implement Citizen Science agendas, which play an ever-increasing role in Labs’ operation.

Two new FORTHEM Labs are launched: Arts & Aesthetics in Contemporary Society coordinated by UiA, and Cultural Heritage coordinated by ULBS.

The University of Valencia leads the Digital Transformation Lab. The objective of this Lab focuses on all the areas that are changing our society. The impact on societies of phenomena such as economy, big data, artificial intelligence, block chain, Augmented and Virtual Reality as medical tool, digitalization of political parties, precision agriculture, smart tourism, new banking, are just some of the issues that must be analysed.

The nine current Labs are:

  1. Digital Transformation, coordinated by University of Valencia.
  2. Climate and Resources, coordinated by Johannes Gutenberg Universität, Mainz, Germany.
  3. Diversity & Migration, coordinated by University of Palermo, Italy.
  4. Multilingualism in School and Higher Education, Coordinated by University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
  5. Food Science, coordinated by University of Burgundy, France
  6. Experiencing Europe, coordinated by University of Opole, Poland.
  7. Resilience, life quality and demographic change, coordinated by University of Latvia, Riga.
  8. Cultural Heritage, coordinated by Lucian Blaga University, Sibiu, Romania
  9. Arts & Aesthetics in Contemporary Society, coordinated by University of Agder, Norway

How to get to know more about them? Where to seek information on how to join these and other Labs?

A dedicated FORTHEM webpage includes Lab descriptions and contact to each lab’s coordinators.

You can also address your questions to forthem@uv.es

The Labs are designed to provide the framework for diverse, collaborative, flexible, experimental and dynamic learning environments, with the aim of encouraging our students to become innovative process designers and to develop future skills such as analytical thinking, creativity and communication.

Outputs from the Labs will include new online learning material for the FORTHEM Digital Academy, new crash courses, joint scientific publications and final reports of civic engagement projects.

In the longer term, the FORTHEM Alliance is working on the creation of collective PhD groups and joint degree programmes related to the nine themes. The FORTHEM Campus is closely linked to the activities of all FORTHEM Labs.
