María Dolores Núnez Ávila has been awarded the PRIZE FOR BEST DOCTORAL THESIS ON THE PROMOTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS by the JAIME BRUNET FOUNDATION of the Public University of Navarra.
His thesis was entitled ‘Indigenous Peoples, Human Rights and Extractive Activities in Ecuador’ and was supervised by Professor José Elías Esteve.
The lawyer and Doctor of Law María Dolores Núñez Ávila has received the 8th Jaime Brunet Doctoral Thesis Prize from the Public University of Navarra (UPNA) for her research work ‘Indigenous Peoples. Human Rights and Extractive Activities in Ecuador", which she defended at the University of Valencia. The prize, awarded by the Jaime Brunet Foundation (based at the Public University of Navarra, UPNA) and endowed with 2,000 euros and the publication of the work, seeks to recognise those doctoral theses whose basic research content has a direct relationship with human rights and their defence and promotion.
In her work, directed by José Elías Esteve Moltó, a lecturer at the University of Valencia, the prize-winner tackles, from a multidisciplinary perspective, the extractive phenomenon in indigenous territory in Ecuador, focusing on oil and mining activities and the lack of legal responsibility of transnational companies within the framework of international law. To this end, the author carried out a historical, political, economic, legal, anthropological and environmental study to understand the different aspects of the phenomenon and how the dynamics of the interaction of the subjects of this socio-environmental conflict operate.
