This training day, promoted by the Universitat de València, will be held on 25 November. The Jean Monnet Chair for Services of General Economic Interest (SIEGE) is organising this edition in La Pobla de Vallbona, entitled ‘Services of General Economic Interest and Citizenship: Citizens as Users of Essential Services’.

The Ethnological Museum ‘La Casa Gran de la Pobla de Vallbona’ will host the 1st edition of this Autumn University on the last Friday of November, which on this occasion will focus on services of general interest, a concept that includes sectors such as telecommunications, banking, postal services, water supplies, gas, electricity, transport... and even, under certain circumstances, health and social services.

The conference will begin at 5 p.m. with the opening ceremony, which will be attended by the vice-principal for Culture and Society of the UV, Ester Alba Pagán; the coordinator of the event and director of the Jean Monnet SGEI Chair, María Jesús García García; the councillor for Culture of La Pobla de Vallbona City Council, Beatriu Palmero i Simón; and representatives of the Valencian Provincial Council and Caixa Popular.

Next, the professor in Constitutional Law at the UV, Diego González Cadenas, will open the lecture series with a speech on ‘The concept of citizenship in the European Union’. María Jesús García, professor of Administrative Law at the UV and director of the Jean Monnet SIEGE Chair, will give the next paper titled ‘Citizens as users of economic services of general interest: guarantees of citizenship in the face of essential services’. The session will end with a debate between the speakers and the audience.

This event, which is part of the Seasonal Universities programme of the Universitat de València, has been organised by the UV Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture, Territory and Society and the Jean Monnet Chair for Services of General Economic Interest within the framework of social and territorial cohesion of the UV —financed by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union—; in collaboration with La Pobla de Vallbona City Council, the Valencian Provincial Council and Caixa Popular.
