The University of Valencia (UV) and the Espai Ciència of the Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània (OCCC) are celebrating Darwin’s Day with two lectures, on February Tuesday 8 and Wednesday. Thus, on Tuesday at the OCCC, Mireia Coscollá and Pilar Domingo, researchers of the Ramon y Cajal Program at the Institute of Integrative Systems Biology (I2SysBio) will deal with the COVID-19 pandemic and on Wednesday, at the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the evolutionary biologist Carles Lalueza-Fox will analyse the genetic history of inequality.

The Darwin Day (#darwinday) is commemorated every February 12 on the occasion of the birth of the English naturalist Charles Darwin (1809-1882), to spread his scientific legacy, which has a great impact on the history of human evolution. In addition, the lecture of Domingo and Coscollá is held as part of the week that is celebrated around the world on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.

Thus, the OCCC cafeteria will host, on Tuesday at 7 pm, the session Conviure con el Coronavirus (‘Living together with the coronavirus’), led by Mireia Coscollá and Pilar Domingo-Calap and moderated by journalist Reis Juan.

The Historia Genética de la Desigualdad (‘Genetic History of Inequality’) session will take place on Wednesday 9 at 1 pm in the Charles Darwin Room of the Burjassot-Paterna Campus, taught by Carles Lalueza-Fox, from the IBE Institute of Evolutionary Biology (Pompeu Fabra University-CSIC). This will take place on the occasion of the publication of the book Inequality: A Genetic History.

This activity has the support of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the Catalan Society of Biology, Acció Cultural del País Valencià, the Octubre Centre de Cultura Contemporània, the UV Chair of Science Dissemination-Scientific Culture and of Innovation Unit and the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECyT). Also collaborating are the Ministry of Science and Innovation, the journal Mètode, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and, on behalf of the UV, the Faculty of Biological Sciences, the Museum of Natural History, the Cavanilles Institute of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology and the Institute for Integrative Systems Biology (UV-CSIC).
