Isabel Cordero Carrión, professor in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Valencia, has received the Women in Science award for her research. The award ceremony was held on May 13th at the Sagunto City Hall.

The Women in Science honorary distinction is an award that recognizes the achievements and contributions of leading women in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) with ties to the city of Sagunto.

The ceremony was presided over by the mayor of the municipality, Darío Moreno, and the Regional Minister for Universities, Science, and Innovation, Toni Iborra. The mayor emphasized the importance of these awards as a tool to promote equality in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). Toni Iborra, for his part, highlighted that they will continue working to foster scientific vocations, promote science communication, and create role models for all girls.

Isabel Cordero expressed her gratitude to all the women who applied for the award: “The greatest success of this distinction is the list of brilliant women who are very close to us and whom we don't always know, recognize, and value as they deserve.” She also highlighted the lack of support for work-life balance that they often experience. She also highlighted the role of women in STEM fields, where they still represent a minority in some disciplines.

A Leading Figure in STEM

Isabel Cordero has a long and distinguished career as a researcher. She holds a degree in Mathematics and a PhD in Astrophysics from the University of Valencia. She has also completed postdoctoral fellowships at internationally renowned institutions, such as the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Germany and the Paris-Meudon Observatory in France.

Currently, she combines her work as an associate professor in the Faculty of Mathematics with intensive research in the fields of applied mathematics and astrophysics. She has over 25 publications in international journals and actively participates in the outreach activities of the University of Valencia's Scientific Culture Unit. She is also a member and co-founder of the Sapiencia Association.
