The seminar will begin on Thursday, January 09, 2025 and will run for eight sessions until Thursday, February 27.

Doctor in Philosophy and member of the Consell Valencià de Cultura Ana Noguera Montagud is the coordinator of the seminar, which will take place at the Colegio Mayor Rector Peset during January and February 2025. Dr. Noguera is also a guest expert of the Neuroderecho research group of the Universitat de València.

The seminar entitled “The brain uncovered? What neuroscience teaches us” focuses on the importance of science and technology as fundamental pillars of our culture and well-being. Through an interdisciplinary approach, advances in neurotechnology, which allow direct connection between human brains and computers, will be explored, as well as their applications in the treatment of various pathologies. However, it will also address the ethical and legal challenges arising from these innovations, such as the protection of human rights and the regulation needed to ensure that the benefits of neuroscience are accessible to all. The seminar will also highlight the role of women in science, promoting a comprehensive discussion on the future of neuroscience and its impact on society.

UV professor Enrique Lanuza Navarro, expert in Neurobiology, and Dr. José Manuel Sánchez Patrón, director of the Neuroderecho group and expert in the International Legal Area of the same, will also participate in the seminar with two presentations that will take place during the month of January.

  • Lecture “What is neuroscience: Heads and tails of the new science”. Ana Noguera Montagud (January 09, 2025).

  • Lecture “What is the brain and what do we know about how it works?”. Enrique Lanuza (January 16, 2025).

  • Lecture: “The legal regulation of neurotechnologies: Neuro-rights”. José Manuel Sánchez Patrón (January 23, 2025).

The advances being made in the field of neurosciences and their consequent neurotechnological applications pose a challenge to legal systems, especially to the fundamental rights of the individual. Until recently, the brain has been an unknown and inaccessible organ, but this situation is changing rapidly due to the ever-increasing knowledge of its functioning, which in turn opens the way to interventions and the use of more sophisticated devices. So much so that it is now possible to “read” brain activity and “write” on it, modifying the person's behavior. Faced with this unprecedented reality, many questions arise from the legal point of view, among others: Does the law have the tools to protect the human brain from possible abuses? Are the human rights already declared sufficient to guarantee this protection? Do we need to adapt these basic rights or create a new catalog? And, if so, what would these new essential rights be? We will try to answer these and other questions in the conference we are proposing”.
