From 1 to 31 July, the Calasparra Town Council and the University of Valencia are going to carry out a scheduled archaeological excavation in the area popularly known as Cerro de la Virgen, in front of the Sanctuary of La Esperanza. The excavations will be directed by Dr. David Martínez Chico from the University of Valencia and a multidisciplinary scientific team.

Cerro de la Virgen has been known since the 1970s, but it has been
catalogued as Argaric and Iberian until today. However, a regulatory survey carried out at the end of 2021 rejected these ancient chronocultural ascriptions, being actually a Late Antique encastillation from the 5th-7th centuries AD.

On the occasion of these preliminary results, Dr. Martínez Chico will give a conference on the 10th of May at 20:00 in the Casa de la Cultura of Calasparra, with the title ‘Preliminary results and future perspectives in Cerro de la Virgen’.

On the other hand, a call has been opened for university students to collaborate in the first campaign. The expenses for this second round are to be paid by the organisation.

All applications should be sent to Dr. Martínez Chico by 20 June to the following e-mail address: david.martinez-chico@uv.es
