Participants Ernestina Badal and Carmen M. Martínez

Ernestina Badal and Carmen M. Martínez Varea have participated in the excavations at Gruta da Caldeirão (Tomar, Portugal) to recover plant samples from the Palaeolithic levels of the cave. In this campaign, the Solutrian sediments have been floated and a large amount of carbonised plant remains have been recovered.

The cavity is important for its Neolithic and Upper and Middle Palaeolithic sequence. The excavation is directed by João Zilhão (ICREA) and Luis Gomes (Universidade de Lisboa). The work is part of the project: "Arqueologia e evolução dos primeiros humanos na fachada atlântica da península Ibérica" directed by João Zilhão and in which the professors of this department participate as specialists in archaeobotany.
