The design of the ‘Research on ICT needs in rural areas of the Valencian Community’ has developed a dual perspective. On the one hand, it has integrated qualitative and quantitative dimensions in its approach to the subject of study. On the other hand, the research team, coming from three Valencian public universities, has integrated researchers from the field of social sciences: sociology, demography and economics, and researchers from the field of applied physics and agricultural engineering. The research process has been jointly coordinated with El Olmo Foundation.
The project analyses the type-approval procedure of ICT access conditions in rural areas compared to cities, and looks at ways of completing infrastructure deployment, ensuring the quality of networks, which currently suffer frequent blackouts and micro-outages, and locating proximity data centres. A survey of Valencian municipalities with less than 5,000 inhabitants has been used to focus the analysis.
