ALVAREZ HORNOS, FRANCISCO JAVIER |
Biography | |||
|
Full Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Valencia (UV), I have developed my scientific career within the GI2AM group, becoming an expert on Environmental Biotechnology and Process Simulation. My research focuses on developing sustainable bioprocesses to treat industrial air emissions and valorize them and other waste streams through fermentation into bioenergy, biofuels, and bulk chemicals. Continuously participating in R&D Projects, since 2017, and leadership of competitive projects since 2021. I led the research tasks regarding the development of novel Clostridia fermentation configurations for biobutanol production from lignocellulosic waste. I demonstrated the feasibility to extend the SSFiR configuration from bioethanol refineries to biobutanol ones, being this outcome the first literature reference on ABE fermentation (Bioresource Technol 2021). Today, I co-lead as principal investigator the GI2AM research by winning the national call Generación Conocimiento with the BioRiceFinery project (PID2021-122454OB-I00) to develop a biorefinery platform from rice straw for sustainable decarbonisation, where advanced fermentation configurations with biomass retention have been developed, increasing butanol productivity up to 10-fold compared with batch reactors (J Chem Technol Biotechnol 2025) and a hybrid gas-stripping-pervaporation system has been designed, reducing energy demand by 60% (Fuel 2024). In additon, co-lead the regional call for competitive groups with the on-going project CIAICO/2023/302 to extend the fermentation platform to urban bioresidues. In the regional call Proyectos Estratégicos en Cooperación with the RECIMAP project (INNEST/2022/205), a new DES-based pretreatment was developed, achieving complete cellulose valorization from cotton-textile residues and producing lactic acid with yields of ~0.5 kg kg⁻¹ (J Environ Chem Eng 2025). I would like to highlight my international collaboration with Prof. Langenhove’s Group (U. Ghent) where I stayed for 1-year postdoc position applying membrane bioreactors to control air emissions. I regularly collaborate with industry but one of the most outstanding achievements on transfer to industry is the invention together Prof. Gabaldón (UV), JM Peñarrocha (UV) and A Waalkens (Pure Infinity) of Anaerobic Bioscrubber technology. This EU & USA patented technology represents a breakthrough in solvent emission control, converting solvent emissions into bioenergy. It’s the unique active USA licence of ETSE-UV and last July 2025 it has been installed the first commercial unit. Regarding training, I’m one of the main supervisors of PhD students of the team supervising 8 PhD Thesis (2015, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2025 and 3 ongoing). Since 2020, I’m the Secretary of the Chemical Engineering Department of UV. |

Mª Vicenta González Alfaro studied Chemical Sciences, specializing in Industrial Chemistry, at the University of Valencia (1987-1992). She earned her PhD in Chemical Sciences from the same university in 1998 under the supervision of Dr. Avelino Corma Canós and Dr. A.V. Orchillés Balbastre, receiving the 'cum laude' distinction and the Extraordinary Doctoral Award. She has published 33 research papers in various fields of Chemical Engineering, mainly in the areas of heterogeneous catalysis, separation operations, and phase equilibrium, and has presented numerous papers at conferences. In recent years, she has collaborated with 3 international research centers, notably the Institute of Catalysis at Cardiff University and the University of Cambridge. Her research line dedicated to heterogeneous catalysis began in 1993 when she started working with Dr. Avelino Corma of the ITQ, a joint center of the Polytechnic University of Valencia-CSIC. During that period, her line of work was focused on the search for and optimization of zeolite-based catalysts for catalytic cracking, having worked with pure compounds (paraffins, naphthenes, etc.). Since 1995, she has conducted part of her research in the field of vapor-liquid equilibrium of binary mixtures, joining the group specializing in the Thermodynamics of Electrolyte-Containing Solutions in the Department of Chemical Engineering. The group's objective has been to use electrolytes as entrainers for the extractive distillation separation of azeotropic or hard-to-separate mixtures. Initially, inorganic salts were used as extractants, but starting in 2006, they were replaced by ionic liquids, making the group one of the first in the world to use them as entrainers in the extractive distillation of mixtures. This line of research is complemented by the experimental determination of the thermodynamic and transport properties of mixtures formed by solvents and inorganic salts or ionic liquids. Since 2018, she has rejoined the Heterogeneous Catalysis group of the Department of Chemical Engineering. Some of the objectives of this research group are both the elimination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) through catalytic oxidation (improving the activity and stability of the catalysts used), and the valorization of biomass as a biofuel, using catalytic materials. In recent years, she has also worked on a project for the synthesis of photocatalytic materials by the electrochemical anodization of titanium. She has participated in 20 research projects as a researcher. She has been recognized for five periods of research activity (sexennia) as a Full Professor. |

[ Automatic translation ] I am a Full Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Valencia (UVEG) and researcher at the Environmental Engineering Research Group (GI2AM). I have a degree in Chemical Engineering and a Masters in Environmental Engineering from the University of Valencia (UV-UPV). I did my doctoral thesis in the Chemical, Environmental and Process Engineering program of the UVEG, with the qualification of "Cum Laude", International Mention and Extraordinary Doctorate Award. My research activity focuses on the development of bioprocesses for the valorization of waste streams and their integration in biorefinery platforms, aimed at obtaining biofuels, bioplastics and other products of high added value from different types of waste, including agricultural, agro-industrial, textile and other complex waste of industrial origin. This line addresses the transformation of these streams through fermentative processes and the design of operation strategies aimed at maximizing the production of target compounds, with application in the industrial environment. I develop my research activity in collaboration with national and international groups, within the framework of regional, state and European projects, among which the Marie Curie "NextAirBiotreat" project stands out, which included a stay in the R&D department of PAS Solutions BV (Netherlands). Also, I obtained a competitive postdoctoral contract from the Generalitat Valenciana, with a research stay at the Universidade da Coruña. My academic activity is completed with the direction of final master's theses and doctoral theses, as well as with the academic coordination of the first year of the Degree in Chemical Engineering and the Double Degreein Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. |
