The International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015), whose closing ceremony will be on 6 February 2016 in Mérida, Yucatán (Mexico), is a global initiative passed by the United Nations to make everybody aware on how optical technologies promote the sustainable development and provide solutions to world challenges in energy, agriculture, communications and health, among others. The proclamation of 2015 as International Year of Light and its impact beyond 2015 are, thus, a good excuse to promote a wide range of initiatives that evince at all levels the colossal abilities of light radiation in the current Science, Technology, Culture and Education.

On the occasion of this International Year of Light and its subsequent projection, this exhibition aims to call the attention to the general public on the light phenomenon and the multiple technologies based on the light which are present in our daily life without us being totally aware of it. Light in its multiple aspects has behind it a long and captivating history, but in the beginnings of the 21st century, its future gives an even more fascinating glimpse and is a key element for the comprehensive development of our society.

This exhibition is organised by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality of the Universitat de València on initiative of some professor of the Faculty of Physics and of the Light Laboratory, under the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de València, which precisely celebrates 25 years of existence. In it is presented a wide view of the light potential as a place where Research, Technique and Artistic Creativity take place. The exhibition, which unites Science and Art, tries to call the attention of the visitors through the exhibition of information panels, multimedia videos, different historical pieces and different holograms, as well as other artistic works between which the projects On-Off (2001) and On-Sense (2015) carried out by the Light Laboratory are recognised. At the same time of the exhibition, it will take place a cycle of conferences of expository nature.
