The issue we are dealing could be a bit controversial, but is very important that there might be some method for assessing the work of the thesis’ directors. The directors often do not have the time for doing an appropriate supervision and they may not be sufficiently prepared for the supervision, or not receiving the adequate support, so it is necessary to detect these cases in order to solve them.
We must ask ourselves about the aspects that motivate the work of the director and that for this reason affect significantly on the quality of their work. These are the following:
- The recognition and the compensation of the directors for the time that they dedicate to the supervision of work.
- The little or no training that the thesis’ directors receive for doing their work properly.
- The lack of dialogue between new directors and experienced ones for exchanging their point of views about the responsibility work of the research.
- The certainty of the director about the capacities of the doctoral student for doing his/her job properly.
- The need of the director of showing the lacks that the student should have already learnt as the director detects a lack of preparation by the student for facing the research tasks.
Within the doctoral programme it will be ensure that the above requirements are accomplished in order to guarantee the excellence of the same. The most important is to have the conviction that the adequate time has been devoted to the student, which will not always be the same time for all the students as it depends mostly of the intellectual capacity of them. Also it will be implemented an assessment plan of the directors, based on:
- Interviews to the students of the programme that just have finished the doctoral studies for consulting the level of satisfaction obtained.
- Regular interviews between coordinators and students as part of the supervision plan.
- Inclusion in the annual report of each director related with the quality of their own supervison.
- The development of confidential reports.
- The development of work groups about specific topics for preserving the anonymity and confidentiality of the information obtained.
