The academic committee of the programme will study the curriculum of doctoral students and will decide whether they must take additional bridging courses or not. If they must, the committee will provide a list of the subjects to be taken from the postgraduate academic offer of any university, taking into account the specific training that the doctoral student requires for the proper development of their research.

Students who have completed a master’s degree in Remote Sensing (Spanish or European) with a minimum of 60 ECTS credits won’t need any additional training.

 

Bridging courses

In the case of students who have completed any other master’s degree, and according to their curriculum and the courses taken, the Doctoral Academic Committee will decide whether or not the student needs bridging courses.

These courses will be a maximum of 20 ECTS credits and, according to the student’s profile, the following subjects are proposed, all belonging to the Master’s Degree in Remote Sensing taught at the University of Valencia:

  • Fundamentals (10 ECTS): It covers the different elements involved in the capturing of images by the sensors integrated in the different platforms, the physical principles and radiometry experiments in the laboratory.
  • Image Processing (10ECTS): This subject explains the characteristics of systems, sensors and images, metadata, generic formats and remote sensing products, as well as image processing techniques such as colour composition, contrast adjustments, filters and techniques for image restoration. It introduces geometric, radiometric and atmospheric correction methods, distinguishing the latter depending on the spectral region, as well as the correction of topographic effects in the optical domain. It also explains microwave techniques distinguishing between passive radiometers and radar. Moreover, it addresses some statistical treatments for images, such as the analysis of spatial continuity with variograms, and the kriging and cokriging techniques. The practical sessions are taught using the commercial software ENVI, the programming language Matlab and the free software S-GeMS.  
  • Remote Sensing Applications (10 ECTS): This subject covers the remote sensing techniques used in the observation of the biosphere, atmosphere, oceans and cryosphere.
