JOLIN was founded in 2016 by professors Julia Haba Osca and Maricel Esteban Fonollosa at the Department of English and German Philology with the aim of deepening literary, social, educational and visual studies through illustrated literature (illustrated books, graphic novels, photo-textual world, comics, etc.), a literary modality that tends to be neglected despite its social tradition and impact on the publishing world.

Over time, the idea of exploring textual genres that incorporate a multimodal element as a central axis, such as image, has developed into a participatory space for the collective construction of knowledge with the collaboration of different university agents, artistic and social agents who, rooted in the basic principles of emancipatory education, have shown the express will to work for a university that is committed to the sustainability of life, of language and of a traditionally minoritised culture.

The current situation we are living in (social, economic, cultural, political, health, etc.) makes it urgent to consider precisely these spaces for reflection where we can critically question the society that surrounds us through humanism, education and culture, reflecting on the role of social agents.

Therefore, with the support of Professor Francisco González-Sala, from the Department of Developmental and Educational Psychology at the Universitat de València, we conceive "JOLIN2021 - ILLUSTRAR LA CIÈNCIA" as a platform for making a difference, we conceive "JOLIN2021 - ILLUSTRATING SCIENCE" as a platform to take a stand and we are committed to a day that revolves around the synergies between the humanities and the experimental, natural and behavioural sciences, and the meeting points and common projects that connect all these areas of knowledge. JOLIN2021 aims to go beyond the merely linguistic-artistic-literary facet and to focus on the transfer of knowledge in the construction of political subjects, together with their processes of awareness and empowerment in the field of science.

Furthermore, JOLIN2021 will be equipped with all the technological innovations (video broadcasting and recording), extending its multimodal nature and incorporating both synchronous and asynchronous online sessions, together with face-to-face workshops that allow the use and promotion of Valencian not only in literature (illustrated) but also as a language of common use among members of the university community and those who aspire to become one.

The conference will feature leading professionals who will share with us their experience, life lessons and research on illustrated literature and comics, with particular emphasis on ILLUSTRATED LITERATURE and EXPERIMENTAL, NATURAL AND BEHAVIOURAL SCIENCES.

Admission is free and will have both a face-to-face and online modality.
