It is an unavoidable requirement for society to learn the historic background to understand better the present. It is necessary to reconstruct this history applying a scientific method to avoid explanations based on myths and misrepresentations. Therefore, it is necessary to train specialists capable of improving the field of historiography and deepen in the knowledge of the past from scientific assumptions.
The process of political construction of the European Union faces, at present, a series of problems such as the mutual boundaries of sovereignty between its different members, harmonisation of entities with different cultural and historical traditions, even in conflict, and the necessity to look for a common ideological foundation that respects the identity of their members. The historical reflection and a better knowledge of the past, especially in the study of politic entities that faced similar problems, can contribute to a better understanding of current challenges.
One of these is constituted, within the regional Southern Europe, by the Western Mediterranean territories, both Italian and Spanish, which were integrated in the Spanish Monarchy. That was imposed to its members like a project based on political loyalty to the Habsburg dynasty, identified with the defense of Catholicism, and regards to the territorial particularities that form the model of government of the Monarchy, which facilitated the consolidation and the permanence of identity traits -language, cultures, legal and political systems…- with the support by local leaders groups. With the disappearance of the Spanish Monarchy, the Spanish and Italian territories followed a different trajectory that culminated in the 19th century with their respective integration in the kingdoms of Spain and Italy. However, some of those identity traits have survived.
The richness of this common history and its distinguishing traits require the training of specialists, who could develop direct research tasks based on the extensive archival materials, and reflection and synthesis from the historiographical sources.
The previous academic training most appropriate are the Undergraduate degree in History, History and Heritage and Humanities: Intercultural studies, and other studies in which Modern History has a strong presence in its curriculum. The graduates in Humanities, Geography and History (section of history) and Philosophy and Humanities of the former curriculums, previous to the implementation of Undergraduate studies are equally considered.
For the graduates of other studies, the Master’s Degree Coordinating Committee, after analysing the curriculum vitae of the applicants (including, in this case, a personal interview), will establish the bridging courses that the students have to pass in advance.

Growing concerns about development and poverty and their complexity have led international bodies, states and social organisations to look for qualified professionals with a specific and interdisciplinary background. The Masters in Development Aid intends to meet this need by offering high-level education with two complementary graduate profiles: the practitioner and the researcher.
The first one seeks to respond to the process of professionalization of the sector, with a clearly practical focus aimed at acquiring knowledge and problem-solving skills in a real and practical context. This practical orientation is complemented by a critical reflection on theoretical foundations, so that students can compare the theoretical discussion with real experiences in different settings. The researcher pathway intends to provide them with methodological bases for research, to develop systematic and critical thinking for consistent and effective actions in various areas of development from different specialties.
The recommended admission profile is that of a university graduate, holder of a diplomatura, holder of a licenciatura or engineer (3-year degree) or engineer (5-year degree) with a training related to the different specialities offered and willing to have a professional focus on the intervention or the research in cooperation and development policy.
The Master’s Academic Commission sets the qualitative and quantitative admission criteria, mostly based on the candidate’s academic records and the affinities of his/her previous qualifications with the masters subjects. The criteria are used in the evaluation of the applications and the selection of the candidates.
Applicants must submit a CV and a motivation letter. They will be called to an interview in which they will express their motivation in doing the masters and attention will be paid to their potential projects in the area of development aid.
Some priority will be given to those having done activities in the study fields even though experience per se is not an excluding criterion.
Evaluation criteria
1. Potential projects: Student’s ability to apply the knowledge gained in the course in the development aid area on the basis of his/her post, job, situation, etc. The multiplying effects of each individual applicant can be rated from 0 to 10.
2. Motivation: Appraised from the manuscript and the applicant’s participation in cooperation-related activities. It is indicative of the applicant’s willingness to devote his/her knowledge and time to development aid. Can be rated between 0 and 10.
3. Experience: Between 0 and 10. Evaluated on the basis of the experience described in the CV in the areas of solidarity and/or social affairs.
4. Previous education and academic records: Between 0 and 10 points. Academic excellence and the adequacy between the previous studies and the masters are taken into account.
Scoring formula
Each scoring criterion has a specified relative importance equivalent to the coefficient by which the score obtained is multiplied for the calculation of the total score. In this particular proposal, the relative importance estimated is as follows:
Projects= 35 %, Motivation = 35 %, Experience = 15 %, Education and academic records = 15% (the formula is: total score =35•Project + 35•Motivation + 15•Experience+15 Education and academic records).

A close look allows us to discover that History, in its various specialities, has considerable social prestige today. In fact, large social groups and communities find their origins in different historical periods and, with them, an essential element of their historical identity. And there is no doubt about the presence of the classical heritage of Greco-Roman culture, which has always been greatly valued, especially in recent years. Indeed, the constitution of the European Union has intensified the search for common roots in the West, whose cultural background is found in Greece and the political one in Rome. Numerous conferences, seminars, publications, etc., as well as the increase in value of the archaeological heritage of this time, have strengthened in recent years the consolidation and revitalisation of the legacy of the Classical World.
The historical ties that bind us to those areas that were part of the classical world need to be considered as the undeniable links with the territories that once formed the Crown of Aragon: Aragon, Valencia, Catalonia and Mallorca, whose mere enumeration clearly conveys that they are historical units formed in the medieval period and with a common past, institutionally manifested in the existence of the Crown of Aragon. These territories (to which we would need to add others such as Sicily, Naples, Sardinia and Roussillon) are obviously interesting for the development of research on medieval history of the Crown of Aragon and its current political, social and cultural institutions, fully incorporated in European culture from the perspective of the historical formation of the peoples of Europe, which is highlighted through the funding of scientific activities (conferences, meetings, celebrations), publications, archaeological excavations, heritage restorations and many more cultural actions.
All these considerations can be extended to modern history, a stage which, after setting its roots in the Middle Ages, opens to the contemporary world to provide the key explanations that answer the questions faced by the world today. It is intended for students from areas of knowledge of Humanities and Social Sciences who have completed an undergraduate degree, a licenciatura or an official Master's degree, especially in History, History of Art, History and Heritage, Humanities, and other areas of knowledge of Humanities and Social Sciences.
This Master's degree is also intended for other graduates, especially for autonomous professionals in the world of culture, personnel from the different public administrations (central, regional or local), and people who prove their work experience in the field of study, if the Master's Academic Committee considers it appropriate, who are in possession of an university degree.
Students who hold a diplomatura must take a minimum of 60 compensating credits corresponding to core subjects from the undergraduate degree in History, for a total of 240 ECTS (180 + 60 ECTS) which are required for official postgraduate programmes.
Criteria to be taken into account:
• Degree, considering the affinity of the student's academic profile to the speciality of the Master's degree. Priority will be given to the undergraduate degrees or licenciaturas in History, History of Art, Heritage, Geography and History or Philosophy and Humanities (with specialisation in History), or any other related official degrees, such as Humanities or Social Sciences.
• Average mark of the academic record.
• Collaboration grants.
• Curriculum vitae (evaluating courses, research merits and professional experience related to the course content).
• Knowledge of languages.
• Previous work experience.
• Additional training and education in the area of study of the Master's degree.
• The student may need to pass a personal interview or present a letter of motivation justifying their interest or motivation to enrol in the Master's degree.
History, because of its pluralism, complexity and generality constitutes a good school for the analysis of social problems at a small and large scale: the training of the historian (not just holding a degree in History) qualifies in many countries for a wide arrange of public and private tasks, trains specialists in the management of organisations and complex projects, in providing individuals with a heuristic and analytic capacity (in its double meaning) that other more specialised studies are not able to communicate.Entrance qualifications:
