
From 11 to 13 February, twenty-one students from different degrees have compete in the internal League of debate of the Universitat of València, with arguments for and against of this question: “Is the linguistic diversity at risk?”. The team F, lead by Sílvia Ors, has won the competition, and Maria Vila, of the same team, has won the prize for best orator. Among every student that has participated in the League, it will be chosen the team that will represent the Universitat de València in the University Debate League of the Xarxa Vives, that will be celebrated in the Central University of Catalonia, in Vic, from 7 to 9 April.
The three sessions of debates have been a sample of exceptional power in words and ideas exchange and each intervention has demonstrate the investigation work of the teams and their effort in structuring powerful speeches and based in oratory techniques. But, Sílvia Ors, Irene Moya, Maria Vila and Jordi Ferrer, were distinguished among all, imposing in the grand final to Laura Luque, Pau Sadurní and Tomàs Moll, the runner-up team. Maria Vila, student in the double degree in Law+Economics, has been recognize as the best orator of the competition.
The six participating teams have built arguments and thrown refutations with information, personal histories and many reasoning, and they have demonstrated their talent in communication, argumentation and oratory, about this year’s subject in the League of Xarxa Vives: “Is the linguistic diversity at risk?”. They are students of various faculties such as, Physics, Law, Philology, Translation and Communication, Psychology and Speech Therapy, Mathematical Science, Economics, Philosophy and Educational Science and Geography and History.
The responsible judge of the correct development and evaluation of the debates is formed by the faculty of the Universitat de València: Elena García, of the Department of Labour and Social Security Law; Rafael Roca and Miquel Nicolás, of the Department of Catalan; and Santiago Vicente, of the Department of Spanish.
It has to be emphasize that the course Talk in public: preparatory for the University Debate League, previously done by the participants, has been key to provide them essential tools to communicate with security and efficacy. By theory, practical exercise and debate simulations, the participants have perfect their abilities to structure their persuasive speeches, improve their body and vocal expression and overcome their stage fright. This course has been taught by Gonçal López-Pampló Rius, professor of the Department of Catalan; Rafael Castelló, professor of the Department of Sociology and Social Anthropology; and Daniel Tormo, actor and dramatist.
The participating students in both parts of the local phase of the UV, both in the formation of the course and the internal league, will get 1,5 credits ECTS. In addition, each component of the winner team of the league and to the best orator will win a prize of 200 € each.
University Debate League of the Xarxa Vives
From 7 to 9 April, 2025, the Central University of Catalonia, in the city of Vic, will embrace the University Debate League of the Xarxa Vives. The team of students that will represent the Universitat de València will be chosen among all the participants of the local phase, that drives the Student Service and organises the Student Information and Promotion Service (SEDI)
The University Debate League of the Xarxa Vives, is a dialectic competition in which different teams of university students debate about a controversial and present subject. The aim of the competition, that is organised since 2005, is encourage the use of words and strengthen abilities like argumentation, oratory, investigation, collaborative work, the staging, the relation with students of other universities of the Xarxa Vives of Universities.
