Gandia, 16 October 2025. - The Chair for Territorial Thinking Joan Noguera (Universitat de València – Gandia City Council), through its Observatorio Territorial, publishes the third number of its quarterly Newsletter. This tool collects and analyses socioeconomic, environmental, and territorial data from Gandia to offer a comprehensive and updated overview of the local reality.
In this edition, corresponding to the third quarter of 2025, the bulletin is focused on three main themes:
- Under the title “Diversidad demográfica, reflejo de la Gandia del presente” (“Demographic diversity, reflection of current Gandia”), the new report highlights that 23.5% of Gandia’s population is foreign-born, with a significant number of citizens from Colombia, Morocco, and Bulgaria. The document underlines that diversity is already a “consolidated reality that improves the social and cultural life of the city”, while presenting a challenge for cohesion and inclusion.
- Regarding economy, the Observatorio states that Gandia continues increasing its offers of tourist accommodation, with a 49% rise between 1996 and 2022, and a forecast to grow further thanks to the new hotels and facilities in the pipeline. Tourist accommodation still is the main type of lodging, representing circa 63% of the total.
- When it comes to territory, the publication assigns a section to the network of protected natural areas, which takes up 30% of the municipality. The most important places are the Parpalló-Borrell Municipal Natural Area, the Marjal de la Safor, the l’Ahuir Beach, and the Serpis Protected Landscape, which together shape a kaleidoscope of ecosystems with a great ecological and landscape value. As included in the document, “Gandia y los espacios naturales mantienen una simbiosis necesaria” (Gandia and its natural areas keep a necessary symbiosis).
The Chair points out that the project is aimed to “transforming data into useful knowledge for planning and city management”, strengthening collaboration between the Universitat de València and Gandia City Council.
The Observatorio Territorial de Gandia is consolidated as a tracking and analysis tool for local development, in line with urban and sustainable agendas (Agenda 2030 and UN New Urban Agenda), providing periodical social, economic, and environmental indicators.
The Chair for Territorial Thinking Joan Noguera continues with its function of applied research and knowledge transfer for urban planning, sustainability, and local development.
