People dancing. Traditional Music and Dance UV Chair

The workshops organised by the Traditional Music and Dance Chair will take place in Banyeres de Mariola (Alicante province) on Saturday, 28 September 2024. Registration open and free of charge.

The UV Traditional Music and Dance Chair Workshops have the objective of fusing academic work with the dissemination of traditional and popular knowledge in relation to dance, music, theatricality and their contexts.

The first workshop, taking place in Banyeres de Mariola on Saturday, 28 September 2024, will deal with the practice of the jota, one of the most widespread choreographed palos in the Valencian geography. An open code genre through which it is possible to freely dance, sing and play. A genre in which cultural background and improvisation have traditionally gone hand in hand, far from the more recent folkloric fixation and singularisation.

The panel discussion will introduce the attendees to the comprehension of this code. The three workshops, which are done simultaneously, will allow everyone to practise what they are interested in the most: the lyrics, the choreographies or the harmonic structure and melodies. The sarao (a gathering in which everyone dances) will close the day, which will prove useful to not only apply what has been learned in a relaxed atmosphere, but also to sing, play and dance collectively.
