Trebouxiophyceae as novel candidates to survive in Mars: assessment of their resistance and ability to produce biomass, and derived interest compounds at small-medium scale using in situ Mars resources (ISRU)".

 A continuación os hago constar un resumen de la charla:

Lichens have been shown to withstand very extreme conditions, including exposure to space and simulated Martian conditions. Trebouxiophyceae microalgae are present in most known lichens and can also resist very restrictive conditions of salt, dehydration, temperature, and UV light when isolated, being able to recover after long exposures to stress.  In this project, we propose to delve into the resistance mechanisms of these species and their possible applications in astrobiology.  A selection of these algae has been cultivated in simulated Mars conditions: low-pressure atmosphere rich in CO2, intense UV radiation, a wide range of temperatures during the day, absence of organic compounds on the surface (simulated Martian regolith), and scarcity of water, with promising results. Our goals are: a) to determine the most extreme combinations of physicochemical conditions that Trebouxiophyceae can face and unravel the molecular mechanisms that allow their survival; b) to evaluate the production of biomass, oxygen, and organic compounds under such conditions; c) the genetic transformation of Trebouxiophyceae to implement production of substances of nutritional or environmental interest; and d) to examine the viability of these microorganisms on a small-medium scale in bioreactors using ISRU for the production of biomass and the generation of a more favorable environment to life on Mars.
