The future of Valencian museums is discussed at the Universitat de València

Cartel Symposium

Under de motto “The Museum of the Future”, the symposium aims to approach new habits and practices that are arising in the management of contemporary art institutions.

22 november 2016

The academic and professional worlds meet at the Universitat de València to reflect and debate about the adaptation of museums to the complex current social reality. Certainly, it seems necessary searching for new formulas or tools to connect the museum institutions with a public that is more and more active and trained. The concept of museum has evolved throughout the years and, with it, its audience: wide, curious and in a constant innovation and updating progress.

The symposium “The Museum of the Future” is coordinated by Mariángeles Pérez Martín and María Roca Cabrera, graduated in Art History and the Master’s Degree in Art History and Visual Culture of the Universitat de València. The events, which are inside the framework of the series of conferences “Parlem d’Art” (Let’s speak about art), will take place next Friday 25 November on Joan Fuster Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Geography and History.

The activity is conceived as an introductory guide to the 21th century museum, where culture and education are basic ingredients to enrich and improve the experience of the attendant public. Therefore, there will be a sharing of ideas between the different sectors: speakers, students and general public.

The activity is conceived as an introductory guide to the 21th century museum, where culture and education are basic ingredients to enrich and improve the experience of the attendant public.

The speakers, all of them experts in art subject and with notions about museum management, will contribute with their experience and knowledge about contemporary art in the revitalisation of exhibition rooms. The involved Art History students will give their opinion and innovative proposals in that regard. Given their specialisation, they will probably be the managers of our museums in the near future. Besides professionals and students, in this debate everyone can voice their opinion and that is why the invited attendants to this symposium will also have the opportunity of speaking in favour of the most innovative provided proposals.

The symposium will be structured in three lectures and a round table moderated by Román de la Calle, Full university professor of Aesthetics and Art Theory in the UV, essayist and art critic committed to the study of contemporary art, both in the academic and in the museum field. De la Calle directed for years the Institute of Educational Creativity and Innovation of the UV and encouraged the creation of the Documentation Centre of Valencian Contemporary Art, which is nowadays named after him. Moreover, during the 80ies, he promoted the Valencian Association of Art Critics, and he has been a member of the governing council of the Valencian Institute of Modern Art (IVAM). On her behalf, Mireia Ferrer, professor of the Master’s Degree in Cultural Heritage: Identification, Analysis and Management, and doctor of the Art History department of the Universitat de València, will present the symposium.

Finally, will also take part the professionals Maite Ibáñez, of the Cultural Management area of the UV, Álvaro de los Ángeles, Assistant Director Activities and Programmes of the IVAM and José Luis Pérez Pont, Director of the Museum Consortium of the Valencian Community.
