Educating the Generation Z

Generation Z are those people born between 1994 and 2010, and little by little will take the floor with the intention of changing the way of society and, as a result, education

The term ‘millennial’ has been used indiscriminately in the last years. Both, media and brands seem to be obsessed with this concept. Theoretically, a ‘millennial’ is just a person born from 1980 and 1993, or in other words, the Generation Y. However, the world progresses and bit by bit emerges the need of talking about a new group, the Generation Z.

It may be considered Generation Z all people born between 1994 and 2010. This generation, whose oldest members don’t reach the 22 years old, means a gently interesting change in the dynamic of the society, and therefore, in education.

The two elements that determine this generation are Internet and economical recession; both crucial points for their development and the future development of society.

This generation is considered the first one completely technologic. It is the first grown fully in the digital age, with computers and Internet access all the time. Some of them, the oldest ones, still remember those webs and primitive forums. And that we had to hang up the phone to use Internet, but this is a vague memory. In fact, the memory is so far because they were too young, but they already had that resources.

On the other hand, since they grew in a age of constant economical worry, reductions and social vindication, these made them more conscious than their predecessors.   They are more social, empathetic and they don’t prioritize the wealth, because they have been educated in a world that has shown them that money and economy can come down.

These factors are interesting for the approach of education  for two different means. On the one hand, there is part of this generation that is about to start in the working world and to mould it. On the other hand, other part of this generation is now in school, and their teachers must adapt to the new social and technological thought.

In addition, the Generation Z prioritized individual education and the interactivity. It is not enough with the generalisation , or with the explanation of contents from a table. The more involved teachers will be with their students, the best students will respond to the contents. Every time is more difficult to deny that its going to be more and more important to involve students in the learning process.
