Our objective is to analyze, in an integrated manner, the moral control exercised by the Francoist dictatorship for the surveillance, persecution, and punishment of moral transgressions and sexual dissidence. The acronym, DISEX, is intended to allude to the semantic field of dissection, but reversing the directionality of the verb. Thus, the emphasis is placed not only on the control mechanisms, but also on the experiences of resistance, with the intention of highlighting that dissent also speaks to us in the first person and tells us countless things about the social and cultural meaning of gender and sex.
We seek to foster a necessary and innovative dialogue between analyses of policies and attitudes of moral control and the history of sexual and gender dissidence during the Franco regime. To this end, primarily using legal and oral sources, we examine both repressive structures and the role played by the community, as well as the agency and resistance strategies of individuals, integrating the similarities and differences of territorial patterns based on local studies.
