For the first time, a student from the Master's in Advanced Optometry and Vision Sciences has participated in an international cooperation project for the prevention of cataract-related blindness, in collaboration with the NGO Visió Sense Fronteres. Ana Perea, a master's student, traveled to San Lorenzo, in southern Honduras, accompanied by external professor Isabel Signes, president of the NGO.
During the campaign, in which 251 cataract surgeries were performed, Ana played a key role in the optometric care process. Her tasks included the preliminary visual assessment of patients, biometric eye measurements, and the calculation of the intraocular lens to be implanted. Additionally, she assisted in post-operative follow-up, ensuring proper recovery for the operated patients. As part of her training, she also had the opportunity to attend the operating room and observe surgeries live.
According to Professor Isabel Signes, Ana’s attitude was exceptional, demonstrating great commitment and willingness to carry out all optometric tasks, even during highly demanding workdays.
Ana herself highlighted the impact of this experience on her professional and personal development: “The experience exceeded my expectations and has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on me, both personally and professionally. I am very grateful for this opportunity and hope to continue helping in the future.”
This milestone marks a significant step in the training of master's students, allowing them to apply their knowledge in high-need environments and reinforcing the university’s commitment to international cooperation in visual health.
