The IMPACUMED project (Impact of Pathologies in Mediterranean Aquaculture) of the PAZFP group (Pathogens in Aquaculture: zoonotic and fish pathogens) has been selected to participate in the interdisciplinary macroproject ThinkinAzul within the Complementary Program of Marine Sciences of the Plan for Recovery, Transformation and Resilience of the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The overall objective of the project is to design new strategies for the control of infectious diseases in fish based on a better understanding of both the interaction between the animal and the pathogen and the relationship among virulence, disease transmission and the increase in water temperature associated with global warming. The strategies to be designed will include the development of both rapid detection methods based on nanobiosensors and new animal vaccines by using two approaches: acellular vaccines for immersion administration and vaccines produced in plants for oral administration. Since part of the fish pathogens are also human pathogens, the project has the additional attraction of using a ONEHEALTH approach: by protecting the animals, we protect the ecosystem and, ultimately, the human being
