The Tívoli theatre of Burjassot will hold this Saturday 7th October the opening ceremony of the academic year 2017/2018 of Estalmat, the initiative to encourage the mathematical talent among young students of 12 and 13 years old. The session will start at 11:30 and will also celebrate the 10th anniversary of the project’s beginning in Valencia. The vice-principal for Postgraduate Studies, Rafael Crespo, will attend the event as he is the coordinator of the programme since the beginning.
There will be a performance by the Estalmat Orchestra and a presentation of the course, among other activities.
Estalmat is a project of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences which is intended to detect, orientate and stimulate the mathematical talent of students of 12-13 years old without removing them from their environment. Since its beginning, the project counts on the institutional support of the Universitat de València, the University of Alacant, the Universitat Jaume I of Castellón, the CSIC and the SEMCV (Mathematics Education Society Al-Khwarizmi).
Since its opening, Estalmat CV has selected 250 students along ten years. This year starts the eleventh one. Each year 25 students are chosen during a two-stage process: the first one consist of a written aptitude test, in which diverse mathematical problems described with a simple language are proposed (see the webpage to download other years’ tests). During the second stage, there is an interview with each candidate who has successfully passed the first stage so they can assess their attitude towards the project. The young students take part in the project for two years, in which they attend weekly sessions every Saturday morning. In total there are 20 sessions per year. After this period, the project gives them the opportunity to participate for two more years in the veteran course.
