The Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology (FECYT), an entity under the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, has renewed the accreditation of the Science Culture and Innovation Unit (UCC+i) of the University of Valencia as a key entity in transmitting science, technology and innovation from an informative and citizen-focused perspective.
Since its inception, the UCC+i of the University of Valencia has successfully renewed all accreditations granted by FECYT, maintaining uninterrupted membership in the Network of Science Culture and Innovation Units. The current accreditation is valid until 31 December 2025.
The mission of science culture and innovation units is to make society understand the value of knowledge, with the aim of increasing scientific literacy among citizens and foster their interest in science, technology and innovation. These goals are achieved through a wide range of activities, from communicating university research to organising events tailored to specific and general audiences. Such initiatives aim to inspire scientific vocations and highlight the critical role of science in social progress.
To obtain accreditation, UCC+i units must meet minimum requirements, including having a stable organisational structure led by a full-time dedicated individual, a budget reflecting the entity’s commitment to the unit, and a minimum level of activity across categories such as communication, dissemination, training or research.
Among the University of Valencia’s science popularisation initiatives are projects aimed at secondary education, including a series of lectures delivered by university faculty (Stimulating Scientific Vocations), science workshops (on mathematics, microbiology or archaeology), and Mathematical Routes, tours around Valencia that explore scientific applications through the city’s monumental heritage.
The University of Valencia, through its UCC+i, also organises activities such as science cafés, conferences, seminars, matinees and the European Researchers’ Night. It also sponsors the Estudi General European Award for Science Popularisation. Notable recognitions include the University Management and Best Administrative Practices Award granted in 2019 by the University of Valencia’s Social Council, and the distinction for the most outstanding science culture project in FECYT’s UCC Comcired network in 2012 and 2015.
