Isabel Fariñas, full-time professor of Cell Biology at the Universitat de València, has won the national research prize, in the Santiago Ramón y Cajal category, awarded by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities. Carmen García, researcher at the Institute of Corpuscular Physics, a joint centre of the Universitat de València and the CSIC, has won in the Blas Cabrera category.
Isabel Fariñas is the Principal Investigator and coordinator of the Molecular Neurobiology group at the Universitat de València. His work focuses on the study of the mechanisms responsible for the regulation of brain stem cells. Fariñas has published more than 100 research articles in molecular neurobiology, is a member of the prestigious European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and is among the top 2% of the most cited scientists in the world.
Fariñas Gómez has received the award for his outstanding scientific career, recognised both nationally and internationally, and the excellence of his research with great social impact. His original contributions to the biology of neurotrophic factors and neural stem cells and their applications to the treatment of neurological diseases stand out.
Carmen Garcia of IFIC, winner of the Blas Cabrera Award
For her part, Carmen Garcia is a Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council in the Institute of Corpuscular Physics -IFIC (a joint centre of the CSIC and the Universitat de València). She received the award for the impact of his scientific career, recognised both nationally and internationally, and the excellence of his research in particle physics, which focuses on the study of the fundamental constituents of matter and their interactions. Her contributions in the research of long half-life particles, the development of trace detectors and his participation in the ATLAS experiment, key to the discovery of the Higgs Boson, are particularly noteworthy.
The prizes are endowed with 30,000 euros in each of the categories.
