José Manuel Almerich, new full professor of Stomatology at the Universitat de València

Professor José Manuel Almerich Silla has been awarded the Chair of Stomatology at the Universitat de València. On 20 October, the professor of Dentistry at the Universitat de València presented a teaching project for the subject Preventive and Community Dentistry. In addition, he presented his academic, research and management record and a research project. Almerich was unanimously approved by the members of the evaluation committee.

In his research career, the new full university professor specialised in the epidemiology of oral diseases, which are the main objective of the research he directs at the Universitat de València. He has directed 26 doctoral theses and has participated in 10 research projects obtained in competitive public research calls. As a result, he has published 74 articles in JCR-indexed journals, more than 85 articles in other journals, 16 book chapters and more than 200 scientific communications at national and international conferences.

In the teaching field, Almerich has taught at undergraduate, master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as several of university-specific degrees. He was recognised by the Docentia programme with the maximum score, 200 points, in the period 2015-2020. Furthermore, he has coordinated the Degree in Dentistry and the Master’s Degree in Dental Sciences, as well as several undergraduate and master’s degree subjects. He has signed more than 50 contracts for transfer actions with companies and institutions since the start of these initiatives in 1995.

Almerich has actively participated in the Universitat de València as a member of the Senate, the Centre Board, the Constitutional Committee and other advisory committees in which his participation has been requested. He has been Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry and director of the Department of Stomatology. He is currently the Delegate of the Principal for Teaching in Assistance Centres.

Since 2007, he is the General Director of the Lluís Alcanyís Foundation (Universitat de València), which groups together the clinics of the Universitat de València (Dentistry, Podiatry, Optometry, Nutrition, Physical Activity and Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy and Psychology). He has also directed the Chair ERESA for Medical Diagnosis and is currently directing the Chair of the Valencian School for Health Studies  – GlaxoSmithKline – Universitat de València.

In 1994, he was the first elected president of the Spanish Society of Epidemiology and Oral Public Health, a scientific society in which he has held various positions and been a member of working groups that have produced reports and recommendations on oral public health in Spain.
