System of competition and prizes
In each debate two teams are confronted, which defense opposite positions, I.e, a team is un favour of the subject of the debate, and the other against. The position they have to defend is known just before the debate begins, decided by a drawing before the judged. The orators, in turns, carry out the opening statement, rebuttal and concluding remarks, bearing in mind the maximum duration foreseen for each of them, for which they have a stopwatch in sight. In each turn of interventions only one orator can participate, who has to answer the possible questions of the opposing team. Moreover, the communication among the members of the team during the debate can only be done through written notes.
Each member of the winning team of the local phase and the best orator will win a prize of 200 €. Furthermore, among the participating students of the local phase, the Universitat de València will choose the team that will represent it in the University Debate League 2025, which will take place in the Central University of Catalonia, in Vic, from 7 to 9 April. In this dialectic competition, different teams of students from universities members of the Xarxa Vives have to defend the positions for and against the chosen current subject.
The judged of each debate are composed by three people, one of which works as judge boss. In this occasion Elena García, of the Department of Labour and Social Security Law; Rafael Roca and Miquel Nicolás, of the Department of Catalan; and Santiago Vicente, of the Department de Spanish will participate.
The aim of the University Debate League, that is organised since 2005, is to encourage the use of words and improve the abilities such as organization, oratory, information investigation, collaborative work, staging and relation with students from other universities which are part of the Xarxa Vices of universities. The Debate League is organised by the Xarxa Vices and the Local Phase of the UV is coordinated by the Student Information and Promotion Service (Sedi).
