University Theatre, historical memory and gender perspective, the new scenic programme of the Universitat de València
- UV General Foundation
- October 11th, 2024
The Universitat de València will present the new programme of performing arts that will be developed in the months of October and December with 12 shows in the Sala Matilde Salvador of La Nau Cultural Centre and in the Sala Palmireno, in the Faculty of Geography and History, as part of the programme Culture on Campus. The themes over which the plays will reflect this year are: historic memory, mental health and gender perspective.
La Nau of the Universitat will welcome in October the Exhibition of University Theatre that, near from its 30 year anniversary, will feature two performances produced by the Universitat de València, Ràdio/grafia and Fuller meets Sorolla and the play La història del comunisme contada per a malalts mentals of the University of Alacant.
On Tuesday 15 and Wednesday 16, the programme will be inaugurated by ASSAIG- Theatre Group of the Universitat de València, with their play Ràdio/grafia. This performance is a tribute to radio and its listeners, written by Juanjo Prats and directed by Pep Sanchis.
On Friday 18, the Classroom of Contemporary Theatre of the University of Alacant will host the performance La història del comunisme contada per a malalts mentals de Matei Visniec, translated and directed by Francesc Sanguino. This play is an ironic narration of the paroxysm that takes place in every totalitarian politic system but represented in a humorous tone, typical of the contemporary and characteristic European sense of humour.
The show of the Dance Group of the Universitat de València will close the exhibition, on Thursday 24, with the spectacle Fuller meets Sorolla premiered on San Juan's Night in the Senate of La Nau in commemoration of Sorolla's Year. Directed an choreographed by the prestigious dancer Christine Cloux, a proposal that is a tribute to Sorolla, the painter of the light, and to Loïe Fuller, who danced with the light, both fascinated with its power and effect over who observe and receive it. Contemporary and almost coetaneous, their artwork has been an inspiration for the UV's staging.
On Wednesday 30 and Thursday 31, there will be a third tribute, this time to remember the works of Vicent Andrés Estellés. From his Llibre de Meravelles, Criatura Teatre proposes a homonymous performance that puts the aim on the little stories of one of the most oustanding poems collection of the Valencian author.
Historic memory in November
The series about historic memory of the Teatre Escalante-Diputació de València will open on November with two spectacles. On the first hand, Feriantes (from 5 to 7), performed by El Patio Teatro and Centro Dramático Nacional and written and directed by Izaskun Fernández and Julián Sáenz-López. On the other hand, Frères (days 8 and 9), created by Les Maladroits and Éric de Sarria.
The thematic programme will change the days 13 and 14 with Fondo sobre la piel by Ladyfunta, a visual proposal made by Jessica Martín which explores and meditates over the relationship between body movements and sounds, and between materials and the illumination's dramaturgy.
Parting from this play, the programme will address a “thematic thread about identity problematics linked to women, and it will be conveyed by women dramaturgs, directors and actresses, in matter of creation, direction and interpretation”, the responsible of the Performing Arts Club of the Universitat de València, Domingo Pujante, states.
In this sense Separata by Rocío Chico, interpreted by PuraVida Teatro and directed by Celia T.Palafox, will be played on days 20 and 21. This play analyses the machismo and violence that the institutions play against women, specially from the judicial system; and on days 27 and 28, La Piedosa Creaciones, under the direction of Inma Ruiz and Marta Chust, will stage Pendientes, a play with absolute gender perspective.
Also in December
Gender perspective will stay as the main theme on the schedule for December. The first play will be Eternas (days 4 and 5) by Susana Gisbert and Paula Marí. Directed and interpreted by Mujeres en construcción, it reflects the internal fight that women suffer between being everything that is expected of them or being themselves, and how this tension can mess up mental health.
Vesania: El lugar de todo. Y de la nada. El lugar de la distopia will continue with this reflection, as it is stated in its own synopsis. Contrahecho Producciones will interpret on days 11 and 12 the work of Marcos Luis Hernando, directed by Eva Zapico.
Marina, by Rocambolest Teatre, and written and directed by Aarón Sánchez, will close the programme for this first semester in La Nau UV on 18 and 19 December. A love story made art.
All the functions will start at 19h and every Wednesday there will be a discussion with company members once the play finishes. The tickets for each play can be booked in the establishments of La Tenda UV in La Nau and in the different campus, and also online with the link https://events.fundacio.es/o/5
Theatre with university students at Sala Palmireno
Theatre also comes back to the Sala Palmireno of the Faculty of Geography and History as part of the programme Culture on Campus of the UV. The Sala Palmireno is over all a space for performing arts reserved for university students, such as Improvisional grup de teatre, a students group of the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication of the UV, which, coordinated by professor Jesús Peris, will represent three short theatre plays at the end of November; or the theatre group of the Faculty of Philosophy and Educational Sciences, which coordinated by professor Juan de Dios Bares, will stage a Greco-Latin play at the beginning of December.
From this year, the theatre programme in the Blasco Ibáñez campus will include the cultural activity of the Espai Cultural of the Faculty of Language studies, Translation and Communication of the Universitat de València. This space will present this course the dramatised reading of La confessió, of Louise Doutreligne, interpreted by the group of university theatre Versió Faristol, directed by Jean-Luc Paliès and coordinated by professor Evelio Miñano.
However, the Sala Palmireno has also been incorporated to other festivals of the city, such as the Russafa Escènica festival, that arrived to this space in September.
Domingo Pujante, new responsible of the Performing Arts Club UV
Domingo Pujante is the new responsible of the Performing Arts Club UV, taking over from professor Laura Monrós.
Domingo Pujante González has been linked to the Universitat de València since 1996. He was given the Extraordinary Licensure Award in French Language Studies (1991) and doctorate with the thesis “La obra pánica de Fernando Arrabal y Roland Topor” (2003). Between his investigations and publications related to performing arts, we can highlight his numerous studies dedicated to panic theatre and theatre written by women, not only in the francophone field but also in the Spanish one, and with a special interest on Quebec's theatrical context.
Since 2013 he directs the research group “GIUV-2013-144-HYBRIDA: cultural hybridisations and migrant identities”, and also the scientific journal HYBRIDA, which focuses on cultural studies from a gender perspective, post-colonial and intersectional, and on identity themes linked to sexuality and migrations. He has been professor and invited researcher in numerous institutions of Europe, Africa and America.
He has occupied several management charges as the secretary of the Department of French and Italian, coordinator of Interchanges and head of the contest Activa Cultura. He coordinates the Laboratory of Arts and Aesthetics in Contemporary Society (FORTHEM) and he is member of the French Linguistics Table of the CRUE.
