The Valenciaport Chair of Port Economics presents its fourth Quarterly International Economic Situation Report 2024.

The Valenciaport Chair of Port Economics, belonging to the Universitat de València (UV) and the Port Authority of Valencia (APV), has published its latest International Economic Report for October 2024.

The October 2024 Economic Report presents a detailed analysis of the international situation, addressing key issues such as global economic growth, price stability and geopolitical challenges. The document introduces the International Trade Environment Indicator (IECI), which assesses five critical dimensions: economic growth, price stability, uncertainty, protectionism and institutional quality. The objective of the IECI is to foresee international trade trends based on these factors. The report also highlights fluctuations in commodity prices, where a downward trend is observed, except for precious metals, driven by demand from emerging countries.

It also discusses the impact of geopolitics, particularly in the Middle East, and how an increase in the price of oil could affect the world economy, generating inflation and slowing growth. The report also highlights the evolution of the savings rate in the main economies, noting a decrease in the United States, in contrast to the increase in Europe. It also analyses the productivity imbalance between the United States and Europe, highlighting the competitive advantage of the former due to its single market and the availability of venture capital.

The final analysis suggests that Europe faces a crossroads regarding its competition policy, highlighting the recommendations of the Draghi Report, which seeks to boost innovation and the formation of globally competitive enterprises. However, challenges remain in the implementation of these proposals, especially due to resistance from national governments and European bureaucracy.
