Founder and Science Director, Mendel Brain
Professor of Genetics at the University of Valencia. Expert in Genetics and Genomics applied to human health. As a Principal Investigator, he developed more than 40 research projects, financed by various national and international organizations, and four biotechnological patents that have been transferred to the biopharmaceutical industry. Among his contributions to Biomedicine and Biotechnology, his participation in four international genome sequencing consortia stands out. He has been a scientific advisor to Roche in the area of DNA sequencing. He is the founder and director of the Spanish Journal ‘Revista de Genetica Medica’.
In 1998 he created his first biotechnological company, in the field of genetics (Sistemas Genómicos SL, which is now part of the Eurofins Scientific international group) where he held the position of scientific and strategic director for 12 years. He is a founding partner of another 9 biotechnology companies, most of them located in the Science Park of the University of Valencia. Founder and Science Director of Instituto de Medicina Genómica (now called Health in Code after a sucessful exit of the founders). His latest business venture is Mendel Brain SL, a company that applies Genetics in the field of Psychology and Psychiatry (www.mendelbrain.com)
Among other research projects, his collaboration with the multinational Life Technologies in the development of genome sequencing applications through Next Generation Sequencing stands out. Among his published research articles, it is worth mentioning three publications in the prestigious scientific journal Nature. Currently, his research is focused on the development of tools for the genomic diagnosis of hereditary diseases as well as research aimed at understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms of rare genetic diseases.
For five years (2012-2017) he has been President of the BioRegion of the Valencian Community (BIOVAL). He is also President of the Spanish Association of Entrepreneurs in Science, created in 2012 after the First National Congress of Entrepreneurial Scientists.
