The study of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) represents a challenge in the field of research because, although the prevalence of this diagnosis has increased significantly in recent years, there are still many aspects that remain unknown, including the causes of ASD.
These same factors have probably contributed to the growing interest in ASD beyond the purely professional and research contexts. As a result, ASD is frequently represented in different ways in cultural and informational products, such as television series, films, novels, and the print and audiovisual media.
The presence of ASD in the media has very likely influenced the social perception of the condition among teachers, as well as among the families and peers of children with ASD. This is a relatively underexplored issue that needs to be analysed in order to promote the inclusion of autistic people.
To carry out this research, we established the following objectives:
- To analyse changes in the number and content of news articles published in the national press over the past three decades in which ASD is a central element of the news story.
- To analyse trends in Google searches related to ASD, as well as the content of websites and YouTube videos published over the past decade that propose intervention procedures for ASD.
- To analyse the differential effect on the social perception of ASD among practising and pre-service teachers when using the terms “autism spectrum disorder” and/or “Asperger syndrome.”
- To analyse and compare the perceptions and attitudes towards ASD among primary school children attending classrooms with or without children with ASD.
- To analyse the social perception of ASD among families of children with or without ASD.
Analysing the social perception of ASD across different contexts is essential, as it allows us to gain first-hand insight into existing knowledge, as well as misconceptions and widespread myths. This can help professionals strengthen the dissemination of scientific knowledge about aspects that need to be addressed and counteracted.
This is a pioneering study in our context, as, at the time it was presented, no in-depth analysis had been conducted of the representations of ASD in the media and the social perceptions held by education professionals, families, and peers.
If we truly want social inclusion to become a reality, it is necessary to conduct a thorough analysis, as proposed in this study, that takes into account not only educational and family contexts but also goes a step further by recognising that inclusion is a responsibility shared by society as a whole.
